Web Design

Design is the process of gathering ideas and aesthetically arranging and implementing them, under certain principles to achieve a particular goal. Web design on its own, is the process of conceptualization, planning, modeling, and execution of electronic media content delivering through the internet in the form of mark-up language suitable for interpretation by web   browser and display as Graphical user interface.

Components of web design

The web design components used in the design of websites are the same for all types of design. They include:

This is the arrangement of the graphics, ads and text. In the web world, the main aim is to help the end-users find the information they seek at a glance.

The choice of colours depends on the aim of the design and client; it could be monochromic(one-coloured system, black and white) to multi-coloured design, making known the proper identification of a  person or the brand of an organization, using web-safe colours.

Graphics can include logos, photos, icons, all of which enhance the web design. For easy use, these need to be kept appropriately, in8line with the colour and content of the web page, making sure to avoiding congestion of the page or slow to load.

The use of various fonts can promote a website design.  A good number of web browsers can only read a selected number of fonts, known as “web-safe fonts”.  So, your design should generally work within this widely accepted group of web browsers.

Content and design works together to enhance the aim of the site through visuals and text. Written text should always be relevant and useful. This is to eliminate confusion to the readers and to give them exactly what they want in order to maintain visit on the site. Content should be optimized for search engines and be of a suitable length, incorporating relevant keywords.

Besides the basic components of web design which makes a site beautiful and visually compelling, a website must also always consider who to use it. User-friendliness can be achieved by paying attention to the following facts.

Site architecture, menus, links, buttons and other navigation tools in the web design,  must be created with the consideration of how users browse and search. The aim is to help the user to move around the site with ease, efficiently finding the information they require.

Relevant video and audio encourage in the design can help users to grasp the information, developing understanding in an easy and quick manner. This can encourage visitors to spend more time on the webpage.

Design the webpage, to perform equally well on different browser and operating systems, to increase its viewing.

Advancements in technology give designers the freedom to add movement and innovation, allowing for web design that is always fresh, dynamic and professional.

Increase active user participation and involvement, by adding comment boxes and opinion polls in the design. Convert users from visitors to clients with email forms and newsletter sign-ups.

                Principles of good web design

For a web site to be more functional and still maintain its traffic flow, some principles are observed

A web site should be made easy for visitors to understand the structure of the site by keeping the design uniform throughout the page.  It is necessary to use the same components mentioned above (layout, font, colour, navigational scheme) on every page.

Make the design easy for visitors to find their way around your site. Place a title at the top of every write-up.

It is important for visitors to read your pages and get the required information very easy. Choose a text colour, font family that is to read against your chosen background colour. Example, a dark text on a light or white background, etc.

Quick downloading of graphics, pages, etc,  plays a big role in retaining your visitors.  If your site takes longer to download, you are bound to lose your visitors (Visitors are more time conscious irrespective of the beauty of your design).

You should make your design interest a broad audience or many users (Audience is more appropriate because a site is not for everybody but certain people).  Your design may look great on your computer; but someone visiting it using a different browser, computer or monitor may see quite a different thing.

Screen Resolution:

Bear in mind that the screen resolution of your visitors monitor will vary and that this will influence how your pages are seen.  Conventionally, it is appropriate to suggest that you should design  your web pages for the monitors set at 850 X 600 pixels, the most common screen resolution among web users worldwide.

Before launching your designed website, test all of your pages with as many different and monitors as possible as well as with different versions of web-browsers.
